WNBA.com's "Player Perspectives"

Over the past year WNBA.com has nearly doubled it's number of "Player Perspectives," columns written by the WNBA players themselves. The Player Perspectives started out with Rebecca Lobo's "World According to Me" and the column was such a hit that they added more. Here is a little about each column and what I think of them, on a five star scale.

Cooking with Cool Keesh

This is a relatively new column, as there are only two issues. Nykesha Sales started her column by pleading for help. She admitted that she can't cook. She can order pizza, and reheat, but cook? It's wasn't happening with Keesh. So she asked the fans to help her out by sending in their favorite recipes. For each issue she would pick a recipe or two and cook them, using family and teammates as her guinea pigs. Her first meal was peppercorn steaks, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob. She says she did a good job, her teammates seemed to like them. This column is great, it adds a lot of variety to the list of player perspectives. It is unusual, because basketball is not the focus of this column, in fact, it is rarely mentioned. I give this column three stars because it is very well written. Keesh is funny, it makes you laugh when she relays the responses of her taste testers.

Postcards from Poland

Ticha Penicheiro does a great job with this column. She is playing in Poland during the WNBA off season, and she will be writing home (to WNBA.com) periodically to check in and let us know how she is doing. I'm not sure what will happen to her column once she arrives back in the United States for the WNBA season, maybe it will take a leave of absence until she leaves for Poland again. I give this column three stars as well. It gives great insight into Ticha's life, something you don't get to see from a player very often.

Blazing a New Trail in Portland

Linda Hargrove is the Head Coach for the Portland expansion team. In her column, she gives an inside look at what it takes to build a basketball team from the ground up. She talks about hiring assistants, scouting, selling enough season tickets to ensure her team actually gets to be a team, preparing for the expansion draft, and everything else. In her October 22 issue, entitled Celebrating 5,500 and then some Coach Hargrove expresses her appreciation for the fans, and how supportive they are. I give this column a four, because you don't really get to see what goes on behind the scenes of a team, and Linda Hargrove does a great job of painting this picture for her readers.
