Seattle has finally reached it's season ticket sales goal -- They have sold 5,900 season tickets, four hundred over the required number. Only a week ago Seattle still needed three hundred tickets to make the deadline. Now they have sold seven hundred since, and they are still selling, to win the challenge issued by the Seattle and Portland teams to see who can sell the most tickets before the October 15 WNBA deadline to sell the 5,500 tickets in order to actually get the team. As of Monday, October 11, 1999 Seattle had 5,900 tickets, and Portland 5,500. The winning team will receive a trophy to keep in its city until next summer's WNBA season. Then the trophy will travel between the two cities when the teams begin play next year, and then go to the winner of the season series.
The memory of the Seattle Reign still lingers in Seattle, and some Reign fans are a little skeptical about the WNBA team moving into Seattle. After the ABL folded much of the blame was placed on the WNBA, and some of those people refuse to support something that they believe killed what they loved so much. Some ABL fans are setting aside their feelings toward the ABL and the WNBA and supporting the Women's National Basketball Association for one reason: The players. That's what the ABL was really about, the players. It may not have made for the best business operation, but it was a wonderful opportunity and experience for the players and the fans. Now Seattle has can bring back that experience to the city. The new team can create dreams for the young fans, and fulfill those dreams of the players. But Sue Donaldson and the Seattle City Council may destroy that opportunity for everybody. The Seattle City Council President Sue Donaldson proposed that the team pay $150,000 more for the three year contract the WNBA would sign for the Key Arena. WNBA team officials say they can't afford to have the team in Seattle if the price is raised. If the city council passes this on October 11, there probably won't be a team in Seattle. The City Council is still hurting from the $3 million they lost during last years NBA lockout. The original agreement between the WNBA and the council was that charges would be for expenses, Seattle's way of helping the new team get off it's feet by charging no rent. The extra $150,000 is for rent. Go To Page: 1 2
