The Best Gifts for Women's Basketball Fans

© Colleen Bittner

There are so many gifts out there for women's basketball fans, whether they play basketball, watch basketball, or don't really care one way or another. I am a HUGE women's basketball fan, as anybody who reads my column regularly knows, and love anything pertaining to the American Basketball League (Seattle Reign in Particular) or any of its players. I have found some things on the WNBA and college basketball too, so whatever you are looking for, it just might be mentioned here.

The basketball player/fan is probably the easiest to buy for, especially if they are young. Replica Jerseys are hot items on Christmas lists for children and teenagers. Even boys love the jersey of their favorite player. They are sold for the ABL, WNBA, and USA National Team players. Kate Starbird, Jennifer Azzi, Lisa Leslie, and Cynthia Cooper are among favorites. To complete the outfit, Replica shorts are available for the ABL, and practice shorts are available for the WNBA. The ABL shorts can be found by going to the Lady Foot Locker Site and searching for the team of your choice. Shooting Shirts are also available for most ABL teams that way also. WNBA shooting shirts can be found at the WNBA site

Shoes are another great gift for basketball fans, especially if they are endorsed by a professional basketball player. Jennifer Azzi's shoe, the 3D Quotient, says AZ on the toe, symbolizing Jennifer's last name. I myself don't have a pair, but those who do say they are great, very comfortable. They come in white with black trim, black with white trim, and white with athletic blue trim. They are cool looking. Other player shoes are Sheryl Swoopes shoe, the "Air Swoops"; Cynthia Cooper's "Air Max Shake 'Em Up"; Tina Thompson's "Air Post 'Em Up"; Ruthie Bolton-Holifield's "Air Run 'Em Up; and Saudia Roundtree and Yolanda Griffith's "Decision DMX6." All of these shoes with the exception of Azzi's shoe can be found at the Eastbay site.

Books are a great gift for any basketball fan (Well, as long as they are old enough to read.) One of my favorites is Playing in a new League by Sara Gogol. Playing in a New League is about the beginning of the American Basketball League, each chapter featuring one or more key people in the startup of the ABL. Venus to the Hoop is another great one, it is about the 1996 Gold Medal Olympic Team and what they went through to earn the biggest honor in women's basketball. Shooting from the Outside is another book about the '96 Olympic team, but from head Coach Tara VanDerveer's point of view. It gives insight as to what Tara was thinking through the year she coached the USA team, and how this remarkable woman coached her team to victory. There are many more books on women's basketball, ABL, college, WNBA and even some on coaching women's basketball to be found here.
