When the book was published in America in September 1998, it was renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The book had already earned many accolades in the UK and the name change didn’t hamper its success in the US.
J.K. quickly followed up with three sequels to complete the series. J.K. Rowling became a household name and Harry Potter topped the New York Times bestsellers list. It has been estimated that, by the summer of 2000, J.K./ had earned more than $400 million from the Harry Potter series, which has sold more than 30 million copies in 30 countries. Not bad for a woman whose first book Rabbit, written at age six, had a main character called Miss Bee.
