In 1970, Michele was diagnosed with leukemia. Anne somehow managed to care for her child and finish her Masters, earning it in 1972. This same year, Anne suffered the greatest tragedy in her life since the loss of her mother. On August 5, 1972, just six weeks before her sixth birthday, Michele succumbed to her leukemia. Her parents spent the next months in an alcoholic haze to help deal with their loss.
Anne and her husband took the money from the sale of the film rights and did some international traveling. While they were traveling, Anne learned that she was again pregnant. On March 11, 1979, Anne gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Christopher. Anne continued to write in various formats. In 1989, when Stan retired from his teaching position at San Francisco State University, the family moved back to New Orleans. They bought a house in the Garden District of First Street and continue to live there today. Anne remains happily married and continues to be one of the country’s best-loved and most successful authors.
