Talent vs. Looks, Tenacity vs. Luck

For quite some time now, the magazine business has been sticking with actresses, pop stars and other untouchables for its magazine covers. The age of the model has given way to the age of the "Somebody with Talent" category, as uber-models Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Elle MacPherson have fallen to the wayside (except for the odd cover or two on the front of a fitness magazine).

I actually look forward to the celebrity cover over seeing the fresh piece of meat from Ford or Wilhelmina Models. There are only so many anorexic underagers that can grace a cover that will prompt consumers to buy it. How can I relate, at the ripe old age of 25, with a 17-year-old neophyte with nothing more on her resume than eighth-grade graduate and occasional babysitter?

Instead, I relish the covers featuring women I wish to emulate--whether it be in character or hairstyle. The newest covers for August include Catherine Zeta Jones for Marie Claire and Britney Spears for Glamour. I really do not have an affinity for either actress, but I respect the charisma and talent they have that got them to where they are today. Even though I do not aspire to be an actress or a singer (except for rare, weak moments when the sun is shining brightly and I'm singing along to the radio in better-than-average tones), I still strive to be the best in my field. Knowing that others have reached the highest heights in theirs gives me comfort ... and motivation.
