Big changes happened last week at the Hearst Corporation. The home of such iconic magazines as Cosmopolitan and Esquire, it has experienced a change in tenants. Glenda Bailey, editor in chief of the women-issues magazine Marie Claire has switched base camps and is now the head honcho at fellow-Hearst mag Bazaar. Why the change? Well, two years into her three-year contract, previous Bazaar chief Kate Betts has been canned.
It's sad how the old cliche, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" has not sunk into some people's heads. Betts worked hard at creating a more youthful magazine, moving away from the stylish, stark photography that had become Bazaar's trademark by using a more eclectic font and "fringe" covergirls (i.e. Chloe Sevigny).
Bad call. Betts turned Bazaar, the closest competitor to fashion bible Vogue, into a teen magazine wannabe. However, the Betts book had fashion that did not have low price-points nor any teen-savvy.
So, Betts is out. Bailey is in. It is just a matter of time to see if Bazaar can get its footing again.
