Little Girls in a Big World

It shouldn't be all that surprising. If Martha, Oprah, Rosie and even Puff Daddy could do it, why can't they? "They" are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, better known as the Olsen Twins. It's crazy to realize that most of America remembers them as babies, taking turns spending the SAG-sanctioned three hours under the hot lights of a studio filming Full House. However, after that show was cancelled a few years back, whatever was to become of these cute, sweet and bankable little girls?

Well, first there were the movies -- a whole series under the umbrella of 'Mary-Kate and Ashley's Adventures.' Then there were the series of books, quite popular among the post-Beatrix Potter set. But now, there's going to be a magazine, named -- what else? -- Mary-Kate and Ashley. Focused toward "tweens" (the six to 12 age group), magazine content will be geared toward how to snag that first kiss rather than how to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Illinois-based H&S Media, the publisher seeing dollar signs in its eyes, plans to initially offer six issues a year with a run of 250,000 copies per issue. Wal-Mart plans to carry 100,000 of those issues, which will cross-merchandise nicely with Mary-Kate and Ashley's clothing line, debuting this month. The twins are expected to grace the first cover, but other issues may not feature them (sure, that's what Oprah said too).

Let's hope that this magazine survives the demise of an over-populated market, which includes Girl's Life and a newly designed Tiger Beat. For $5.95 an issue, it would be well-suited to have a complementary issue of Oprah's O attached for those moms who are most likely buying Mary-Kate and Ashley.
