What is your nightmare?

© Geraldine Wagner

Anthony DeMello was a Jesuit priest who was born in Bombay, India. He was also a counselor who appealed to many people in recovery programs. His was a simple approach to life: God's unconditional love. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church seems to be afraid of Anthony DeMello's message and has banned his writings. DeMello died in 1987 while on a speaking tour in the United States. But he still has a wide following.

Attachments. That's what DeMello says causes us problems. If you're co-dependent, you know what he means. But certainly, everyone is attached to something. The alcoholic is attached to the alcohol, the addict to some other drug, the co-dependent, to a person or a relatinship. We can be attached to ideas, material things, success, and more.

When it becomes a problem, when we become anxious, fearful, and just plain nutty over our attachment, when we obsess about it, hang on to it for dear life, it is no longer something that enhances our lives, it is our nightmare! It causes us more negative emotions and ellicits more crazy behavior in us than anything that is good for us could ever do!

So what is your nightmare today? What has been your nightmare for many days before this? Are you so possessive of your spouse that you can't let him or her lead a separate life from yours? Is getting ahead at work making you forget everything else? Are you finding it more difficult than you want to admit openly, to put down the drink, to remain sober when you promised yourself that you would?

You are living a nightmare!

Say hello to your nightmare...and then set about looking for a way to wake up!
