Gaming has become increasingly popular throughout the United States. For many states and reservations, it has become a major source of tax revenue.
Due to a large increase in gambling activity, many individuals and their families are experiencing hardships as a direct result of gambling addictions. Some states are creating programs for the counseling of gambling addicts. Some of these programs are being funded by the gaming industry. One of the concerns of legislators has been the need for changes in gaming enforcement laws. A lot of the gaming sites across the country are funding charitable causes. These gaming sites usually allow civic groups, community betterment groups, tourism and recreational groups, service organizations and more to participate in charitable gambling. Another form of gambling is sports pools. Should sports pools be allowed on professional athletic events? Should there be limits set on the wagers? and should this be a legal form of gambling? Another very large form of gambling is Bingo, which has been played as part of your religious experience for years. It is now very big business. A big part of the concern with this large gaming operations is the chance of cheating . . .some of the businesses have installed video surveillance equipment to help enforce this. Now we all have been witness to the lastest and greatest form of gambling that has hit the country . . . Powerball ! Although I agree that it is a relatively inexpensive form of gambling for the average person that will go buy from one to five tickets, there are the ones that spend thousands. Does it increase their changes of winning?? Probably, but it only takes one number - the right number. I can tell you right now that I was not one of the lucky 13 that won the fortune, but I will say that if I could not be the winner of the Powerball, I am certainly glad that it was won by people that were not already rich. And just to throw in my 2 cents here, on a $178 million dollar jackpot, I would much rather see 178 families win one million dollars apiece than see one or two win the whole thing - now wouldn't that be fun??
