Steele Crisis In America is Everyone's Problem

There is a real crisis going on in this country and it is not just a male issue, it is not just a female issue . . . it is an issue that will affect everyone sooner or later.

Because I am not 100% up on this issue, I asked James Coleman, USPA President to write on this issue for us.

Steel Crisis in America

It's not my concern - or is it?

The issues today facing the steel industry may seem unrelated to anyone except to the workers or companies, but in fact is becomes an issue for all Americans. If the trend of companies falling into bankruptcy continues, the repercussions might be felt by everyone.

Currently, the steel industry is being inundated with dumping of foreign steel that is driving this industry to slow death. Over 42,000 steelworkers have been displaced or laid off from their jobs and 18 steel companies have filed for bankruptcy since 1997. It is only a matter of time before these numbers grow.

If we do not stop this trend, America will loose control of another major industrial and national security component, as we have found with the oil market. Let's hope we are not that naive to believe that this will mean lower costs for consumers. Think again. When someone else controls the market, they control the price. Just think of the last time you filled up at the gas station.

If America loses its steel industry, who will control the price. Japan? Russia? China?

Just think of all those products that you use in a lifetime that are made by steel - cars, appliances, houses, bridges and buildings to name a few. And what about the steel that is used for our national defense?

Will we have to rely on foreign suppliers to make the steel for our national defense? A scary thought, isn't it?

Communities will feel the initial effects of this with the loss of income to their tax base. The workers and families who support this tax base, in many cases, are active participants and volunteers in not only their communities but also their regional areas. We must remember that for each job lost it could effect up to another four people in other businesses or services. Some states will feel the effects of those layoffs, as they will have to support these families with unemployment income or even welfare. But eventually all of us could feel the effects of losing this industry.
