Last but not least, your mailing envelope. If at all possible, the envelopes should be hand addressed. Using a typed label will make it look like a mass mailing piece . . . and you know what happens to most mass mailing pieces. In my house, most of the time, they go straight into the wastebasket. Another think you can do to entice the recipient to open the envelope is to have some type of art work on it. If your candidate is an incumbent, the use of his/her name in the upper left corner will be beneficial. Constituents like getting mail from their elected representatives.

And finally, whatever you decide to do with your direct mailing piece, try to think like the person you are sending it to. After all, you have to put together the list, then produce the mailing pieces, get them in the mail in a timely fashion, get the envelope noticed by the recipient, have it opened and read, get a check written by the recipient and put back into the mail and sent to you.

Oh, and I can't emphasize enough the use of thank you cards. Send them out within two to three days of receiving a contribution.
