Don't just take a couple and think that will do the trick. You must take several rolls, with each pose a little different in look, smile — leftside, rightside, straight on — and for women, with various hairstyles. When the time comes to choose, look to the political professionals for an opinion.
Other photographs must be taken as well. If you want to show that you have friends and associates in high places and may have influence in order to get things done, you may want to have pictures taken of yourself with your incumbent higher office holders such as governors, senators, etc., but only those that are members of the same political party that has edorsed you.
If you are trying to promote your support for a particular issue — for example, agriculture — maybe you would then want to put on your jeans and flannel shirt and go and have your photograph taken with a well-known area farmer . . . perhaps next to his tractor and in his crop field.
Women need to show their strength in areas that are non-traditional to women, to show that they can represent men in the office they are wanting to hold. For that reason, perhaps a woman candidate would want to have her photograph taken in the same jeans and flannel shirt, in the same scenerio as the man above, or another idea would be to go to a construction site and put on a hard hat and have a photograph taken talking to the construction boss about safety issues.
Now you have the idea!
But before you call your photographer, I have just a few more suggestions for you.
1. Always have a plan. Know the kind of pictures you need and what you will use them for. You will need photos for brochures, newspaper articles, and posters. You decide before the shoot what you need, so you don't have to try to find time and money to do it all over again.
2. Glasses can be a problem. You may want to get duplicate frames with out glass in them, due to reflections.
3. Midday light is hard for outdoor shots. Early morning or late afternoon provides the best lighting for photographs.
4. Always be aware of what is in the background of your photographs. If you are making a big issue out of foreign trade, you don't want a foreign car in the background.
