Seat Belts and Helmets

It is said that safety belt usage reduces the risk of death or serious injury by about 50%.

While less than half a percent of people are involved in an accident having to do with a burning or submerged car, a great number of people use the excuse that they don't want to wear a seat belt because they don't want to be trapped in the car. Actually, in those types of accidents, the vehicle occupants are more likely to be unhurt and therefore capable of escaping more easily.

As far as I'm concerned, education is the key to any safety program, it is not enough to increase safety belt usage to any substantial degree.

One of my biggest concerns is the fact that we do not have seat belts on our school buses for our children. The comments I heard when I asked the question of school bus company was that first of all, it was too expensive to install and second, even if they were there, who was going to make the children put them on.

The operation of a motor vehicle has always been regulated by the state through the practice of licensing, hunters have to wear blaze orange in most states and children have to be immunized . . .do you think these laws or regulations should be of choice??

There are very few states that do not now have a seat belt law. . . is yours one of them?

Both the wearing of seat belts and the use of motorcycle helmets have been linked to highway fund dollars.

Some emergency room doctors, state medical associations and insurance providers claim that a helmet laws drive down insurance premiums and untimately save lives.

Motorcycles and automobiles are the number one cause of head related injuries and at least 10% of these injuries are life-altering

In most states, under current law, persons under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.

Another interesting fact is that most of the new motorcycle helmets carry warranty disclaimers that say that no helmet can be expected to prevent injuries from impacts at speeds in excess of 10 miles per hours.

Should motorcyclists have the choice to decide whether or not the want to wear a helmet??? Does it matter to you?? Should we care??

States with laws for seat belts and helmets can apply for incentive highway funds.

The costs associated with these accidents are borne by the motorcyclists and their families. The rest of us however, pay indirectly for their medical treatment and insurance rates that reflect the cost of care. It has taken a long time to get
