FACT: The mortality rate of all children younger than five in the U.S. lags behind 18 other ntions. An American preschooler is twice as likely to die as one in Japan.
FACT: The proportion of all U.S. infants and toddlers fully vaccinated against preventable disease lags behind 16 other nations. In 1990, according to goals set by the U.S.Surgeon General, there were to be only 500 cases of measles nationally. The actual number of cases of measles was 27,632 with 89 deaths. FACT: More than 30 million Americans live life in medically under served areas (rural or inner-city) without enough doctors or clinics to see a child promptly. FACT: Between nine and 11 million children and 10.6 million women of childbearing age are completely uninsured. Millions of others are underinsured." Effective health care reform will only work through the state government working cooperatively with the providers, insurers, and consumers to control costs and expand insurance coverage.
