I've had folks online tell me how wonderful it is to walk a healing path. Not just any path mind you, but a particular type of path.
It doesn't seem to matter what pattern is used, the person taking those steps in measured, generally circular patterns becomes relaxed, reflective and proceeds into a semi-meditative state. If walking a personal labyrinth, the person may rest at the center, seated or standing. If the state of meditation is deep enough, a form of astral travel may occur, or the person may find themselves receiving messages from guides, flashes of memory from past lives, or even flashes of the future. Grandest of all however is the healing effect these simple patterns have on those that are ill. It has become such a popular method that researchers at Harvard Medical School and John's Hopkins have been studying it. John's Hopkins has a 60' plaza laid out with a classic labyrinth pattern at the Gerontology Institute. So what is it that causes the healing effect? Most folks will likely agree that it can't be just the walking, otherwise walking around the block will have the same results, long term. Is it the meditative state achieved? Possibly. Personally, I think it would be a combination of the two - walking is good for us at all times, never mind around a pattern. So what then? Walking a labyrinth allows another part of your mind to take over where, perhaps, the higher self can maintain enough to control to psychically begin to heal the body. Energies will pour into the aura and chakra system cleansing both. Meanwhile our minds are at rest, our only concern is walking the path. Dr. Herbert Benson of the Mind/Body Institute at Harvard Medical School calls the "Relaxation Response". "This effect has significant long term health benefits, including lower blood pressure and breathing rates, reduced incidents of chronic pain, reduction of insomnia, improved fertility, and many other benefits. Regular meditative practice leads to greater powers of concentration and a sense of 'control' and efficiency in one's life." I have downloaded several patterns and images from the net, and I hope to begin construction of a small classic labyrinth for our local Pagan Pride Day. I can imagine the energies raised during the circle after walking the path will be amazing, and heal not only ourselves, but the Earth as well. If you have the room, you can pattern one after an image online, or visit the websites below for further ideas. Go To Page: 1 2
