One is silver, and the other gold....

A self-proclaimed computer geek friend of mine has taken this one step further. She uses her microphone to make free long distance calls to her friends and family. Although feedback and a few second delay make this process a bit awkward, you can't beat the price!

Let's give Alexander Graham Bell some credit here. Although an avid writer and convert to the information age, if a member of my inner circle is troubled, no amount of missives can substitute for the soothing sound of their voice through the receiver. Ever heard of 3-way calling?

Make a appointment to schedule a phone call. One of my friends and I used to call one another each week after our favorite television program. We utilized the ongoing plot as a reason to chat, which naturally turned toward our lives and those of our mutual acquaintance.

Snail mail. A group of college friends stayed in touch through the years by a system of writing and circulating letters. Each friend wrote a letter and it circulated among the group, with each woman adding her own letter, until it arrived back at the originator, who would then replace her letter with an update and send the bundle on its way.

So Much To Do, So Little Time

Lunch. I realize how trite that sounds, but think about it. It's the perfect excuse. You're allotted that one hour, you might as well enjoy it, right? Call up your girlfriend, make a date and write it - in pen - in your appt book. Good food, good company... heck, you might actually have a productive afternoon!

Go play racquetball or attend yoga classes. Two birds with one stone - spiritual and physical health. Maybe you can cool down over a fruit smoothie afterward.

Attend a craft show, art festival or any other activity that you enjoy but your husband would rather wear blue eye shadow than attend.

Run errands together. You save gas, reduce pollution and get some quality time in the car to catch up on the nuances of adult life.

Shared hobby. If you and your friend both like to, say, make scrapbooks, get together and share your tools and ideas (not to mention photos). For those not familiar with this particular obsession, think scissors that cut in shapes, background pages, collages, stickers and captions - the possibilities are endless!

Come up with any other great ideas? Start a discussion! Who knows, we may actually be responsible
