One is silver, and the other gold....

Remember when nothing was real until you shared it with your best friend? When a new outfit and a night on the town with your friends was the best way to heal a broken heart? Ever regret the long lapses between visits and wish you could find the time to renew or rejuvenate your long ignored friendships?

We all do. So I took a very informal poll of some of the married women in my life. Some have children, some run their own business and at least one has been displaced due to her spouse's career. Not only have these women brought a new meaning to the word innovation, they reminded me that as time is a finite quality, the relationships they choose to foster became that much more precious. After all, one of my dearly married brethren pointed out, when we marry, our spouse's friends become ours, and it is important to maintain a flexibility regarding the people who will enter, and regrettably, exit our lives.

Here are some of the ways these fantastic women manage, chaotic schedule and all, to fortify themselves and their relationships.

Rugrat Central

Have a playdate.
The children need to learn social skills, increase their adaptive ability, and cope with new and different situations and people, right? Take them to the playground, the zoo, anyplace they can be relatively autonomous and safe while you catch up on each other's lives.

A new twist: if the kids are old enough, enroll them in swimming lessons or an art class together, allowing the two of you time to yourself.

Geographically Impaired

I cannot stress enough the importance of a computer and a modem. If you are not PC handy, enroll in a seminar, buy the "idiots guide" or draft the neighbor kid to help you learn. As intimidating as it might seem, computers are notoriously user friendly and once you get the hang of it, you'll wonder how you lived so long without this valuable tool.

E-mail: there is nothing easier than sitting in front of a keyboard and monitor, typing out your thoughts or questions and clicking to send. No time zone considerations, no stamps or envelopes - instant gratification.

With the advent of scanners, webcams, digital cameras and the CD Rom, anyone can send pictures through cyberspace without postage, reprints or negatives. Most photo processors offer the option of putting your prints on disk, so your work is minimum. Pop the CD into the drive and go!
