Barbara Stanny, author of "Prince Charming Isn't Coming:How Women Get Smart About Money", found that women who have learned to manage their own financial affairs "appear to have absorbed seven common lessons." They are:
1. No one is going to take care of my money; that responsibility falls on my shoulders. 2. There is a learning curve to financial profiency that relies as much on courage and tenacity as on reading books and taking courses. 3.If I have trouble learning about money, then it's time to turn inward, examine my emotional blocks, change my fallicious ideas and conquer my fears. 4. There is nothing mysterious about investing; if I trust my intuition, learn from mistakes, go slow and start small, I'll become my own expert. 5. Risk is not another term for loss; I can protect myself from short-term loss with a long-term horizon and a properly allocated portfolio. 6. I don't have to do this alone; I must talk to family and friends, consult with experts, get support and learn from others. 7. I can make a difference; as individuals and as a group, financially responsible women have the means to effect change for themselves and society. Now, generally, I am not a proponent of the Suze Orman "look inward to become financially independent" philosophy. Mostly, I find these types of books demeaning towards women because they view women as needing an extra "lift" to encourage investing. However, it is true that sometimes a person needs something "inspirational" to get them started. If you or someone you know needs a way to believe the hard truth that "Prince Charming isn't coming", then this book and these Seven Realizations will be very helpful. Stanny also says something that I believe will help anyone wanting to become financially independent..."Prince Charming isn't coming...and please note that the prince need not be a man. Our prince could be an insurance settlement, the lottery or anything we fantasize will rescue us financially." A very important point that can help anyone gain, particularly in the world of investing. Go To Page: 1
