Recovery Cartoons

Well! I have received some great replies about the idea of a Cartooning Contest. As we finalise the competition in Kids Korner, announce the winners and get the prizes into the mail - I embark on yet another promotion for our Suite audience. This one is to see who can come up with the best recovery cartoon.

To kick off the venture I thought that I would review a site where two guys have done a great job of presenting Recovery Cartoons professionally.

The site is called Recovery Jones. The cartoons are very funny as well as sensitive, sympathetic and tinged with a sense of 'having been there.'

"Let Me Introduce You."
This is Kevin the co-writer/co-creator/manager. He has been presented as a Super Sponsor!

and this is Michael Jones the artist/co-writer.

They say the 12 Promises are "stunning" - if so, I think it must have worked well for Michael!

They say

"We have both experienced the pain, suffering, powerlessness and unmanageability of active addiction. Through the grace of God, and an active recovery program, we are both happy and content with our clean/sober time."

The idea I have (and one that seems to work well) is that it is most appropriate for people who have experienced addiction to be the ones to create the comics about that experience. It is easier for some who has been 'inside that world' to express the amusing (though simultaneously tragic) aspects of the disease.

Through their free weekly comics/cartoons the guys regularly share the funny side of recovery with recovering alcoholics and addicts worldwide. We all know that active addiction is a very difficult experience for the suffering alcoholic/addict and those in recovery from the disease.

However Michael and Kevin believe that

"we could all could use some comic relief once in a while and we are more than willing to do our utmost to provide it..."
They use these words to describe some of the darker aspects of recovery
"darkness, degradation, humiliation, powerlessness, unmanageability and the consequences of relapse"
They want to warn addicts and alcoholics in a humorous and discerning way that
"insanity is what returns with that first drink or drug."
Their comics have been approved by treatment centers, addictions counselors, clergymen, recovery bookstores, as well as fellow alcoholics/addicts here in Vancouver and abroad. "We are also open to publishing some of our comics in recovery newsletters worldwide free of charge." If you would like to use some of their work contact them ask them permission and then make sure you place a citation which says..."Reprinted with Permission."
