Milestones in the New Millenium for Women

We're well into our new millenium - a time that many women feel confidently will become the women's millennium. The one in which women are at last able to share equally and without discrimination in human society.

Here are some new millenium good news items from countries around the world.
  • New York - The violences that were perpetrated against the women of the Balkans during the war there, are being highlighted here by a stage production called "Necessary Targets".
  • Sri Lanka - launched its Clothesline Project on March 8 2002 to bear witness to, and to speak out against, violence against women as well as to celebrate the indomitable spirit of womankind.
  • Croatia - held its very first V-day event on International Women's Day 2002. The two-hour event celebrated women and their will to survive, it raised funds for the prevention of Violence Against Women. 
  • Taiwan - passed its Family Violence Prevention Act a couple of years back, as a first step to acknowledge and prevent this kind of crime.
  • Japan - has recently passed a law against Domestic Violence as a small step towards challenging their entrenched cultural acceptance of this crime.
  • Nepal - is implementing projects to address the problems of abuse in schools that prevent girls from enjoying their rights and access to education.
  • United Kingdom - held its first anti-trafficking conference in March 2002. The trafficking of women and girls is widely acknowledged to be one of the world's fastest growing criminal activities, and global interventions are being mobilized to bring it to an end.
  • Russia - has formed the 'Angel Coalition', an NGO that works to combat the international sexual trafficking of Russian women and to rescue and assist the survivors. 
  • Kenya - has passed a law against FGM - Female Genital Mutilation - the cruel and sub-human practice that is still rife in many parts of the world.
  • Mexico - has recently shown interest in the prevention of family violence and it supports NGO's like 'Alternativas Pacificas' that promote the necessity for shelters for battered women.
  • China - has just a formed a National Women's Rights group that includes the support of government officials too.
  • Turkey - has had some success in revising legislation that is prejudicial to the rights of married women.
  • Philippines - has recently completed important work to improve legal recourse for rape survivors.
  • Senegal - is starting to look at gender inequality in that country and activists there are soliciting advice and information on how to go about bringing about legislative change .
