Sexual Abuse of Little Girls in South Africa

Nov 22, 2001 - © Moira Richards

South Africa tragically boasts the highest incidence of rape in the world. There are many reasons put forward to explain why this should be so, but none of them seems really good enough.

Here are twelve cases of abuse of young and very young girls that were reported recently by our media.
  1. A senior schoolteacher is in court to face charges of sexual assault, rape and impregnation of several schoolgirls, committed over a period of 10 years.
  2. Eight men abducted and gang-raped, for 12 hours, two 15-year-old girls.
  3. A pregnant teenaged girl was out shopping. Her brother-in-law and two of his mates (aged 28 and 36) abducted her and gang-raped her.
  4. A 13-year-old girl was abducted by three boys. One of them subsequently raped her.
  5. A man stands accused of raping and murdering the oldest of his three children - his 12-year-old daughter - while she was asleep in her bed. His wife was out visiting with friends at the time, but the two younger siblings were also in the house when he did this.
  6. A man was sentenced to life imprisonment. He had raped the 7-year-old daughter of a co-employee at their place of work. This man is 30 years old and has two young children of his own.
  7. A woman has just taken her abuser to court. She was only 6 years old when her uncle started his decade-long period of abuse. She says he sexually abused her and forced her to have oral and anal sex with him; he raped her and ultimately impregnated her when she was 15 years old. It has taken her more than 30 years to be brave enough to confront him with his crimes in a court of law.
  8. A little girl died from the injuries caused to her when she was raped; she had suffered in hospital with these injuries for four months. Her father is 35 years old and he is the man who is accused of the rape (and now also the murder) of his 4-year-old daughter.
  9. A 17-year-old boy was arrested for the rape of his neighbour's daughter - a little girl of 3, who was seriously injured by the abuse.
  10. A man stands accused of the rape of a 2-year-old girl.
  11. A woman went to visit her mother-in-law, and left her daughter in the care of the child's uncles. These uncles (both men in their 30's) raped their 14-month-old niece and have been arrested.
