The General Assembly (GA) is the central body of the United Nations and it is made up of representatives from all of the UN's member states. The GA meets regularly and discusses and votes on various issues. It establishes a whole variety of programmes, research institutes, and sub-committees to implement its decisions.

It is a joint project of DAW, INSTRAW and UNIFEM. Studies by UNIFEM has proved that women and girls, from all cultures and countries around the world, are the victims of countless acts of violence just because they are female. These acts range from marital rape to the condoned murder of little girls, and so UNIFEM has established the UNIFEM Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women.
