January, 1967 - Judy's had money troubles ever since she left MGM, but now they're really bad. Fans pay her electric and telephone bills.
June, 1967 - A new tour begins, and Judy gives 79 concerts in seven months. A lot of money is coming in, but the IRS and a crooked agent suck up most of it. She's still broke. Spring, 1968 - Fans never know what kind of concert Judy's going to give - when she actually shows up, that is. Some nights she blows them all away. One night, she falls asleep in the middle of her third song. Her daughter Lorna later writes, "It was an endless, hopeless, downward spiral." March 15, 1969 - Judy marries nightclub manager Mickey Deans in England. June 22, 1969 - Judy wakes in the night and, forgetting she's already taken her sleeping pills, takes some more. In the morning, Mickey finds her body in the bathroom. The coroner rules her death "accidental barbiturate poisoning." June 27, 1969 - About 22,000 fans file past Judy's casket in Manhattan, and 2,000 more are turned away. During the service, fans stand outside, playing her songs on portable record players. Should her life have turned out differently? Judy didn't think so. A few months before her death, a reporter asked if she'd do it again. "Oh, come on," she said. "Don't for heaven's sake give me that old sob stuff routine. Of course I'd do it all over again. With all the same mistakes."
