This list of Oz-related events, birthdays, and anniversaries will give you an excuse to celebrate Oz all throughout 2002. More events will be added throughout the year as information on them becomes available, so keep checking back.
January 10 - Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow) born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1904. 24 - Jerry Maren (middle member of the Munchkinland Lollipop Guild) born in Boston in 1920. February 15 - Songwriter Harold Arlen, who composed the music for "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", born in Buffalo, New York in 1905. 23 - Oz director Victor Fleming born in Pasadena, California in 1883. March 17 - 24 - The Second Annual "Munchkins of Oz Cruise" onboard the Costa Atlantica. Eight original Munchkins from the film, as well as the great-grandson of L. Frank Baum and the grandson of Tin Man Jack Haley, will set sail for an Oz-filled week. Activities include autograph sessions, trivia contests, a showing of The Wizard of Oz on the big screen, and lots of interaction with the Munchkins. Frank Baum dies of a stroke in Hollywood, California in 1919. 15 - L. Frank Baum born in Chittenango, New York in 1856. 18 -- The Emerald Event in Greendale, Wisconsin. Historic downtown Greendale welcomes original Munchkin celebrities Margaret Pellegrini and Clarence Swensen. The event also includes costume contests, family entertainment, carriage rides, and unique shops and restaurants. For more information, call (414) 423-3111 or visit http://www.greendale.org June 1 - Frank Morgan (The Wizard) born in New York City in 1890. 4 - Clara Blandick (Aunt Em) born in Hong Kong in 1881. 10 - Judy Garland born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota in 1922. 19 - 23 - The International Wizard of Oz Club's Ozmopolitan Convention at Lake Lawn Lodge in Delavan, Wisconsin. Past events have included a candlelight vigil in Judy's memory, appearances by original Munchkins and other Oz celebrities, Judy movies on the big screen, and a collectors' exchange. If you can't make it in June, the Judy Garland Museum and Birthplace Historic House are open year round.
