Sweet Dreams

by Peggy Hoehne

February and Valentines Day mean sweets for your sweetie! In Wisconsin we make some of the best, and sometimes bizarre, sweets you would want to send to that special someone.

First, some Wisconsin facts, Wisconsin is known as the Dairy State. We used to have more cows than any other state. California now has more cows, but we still have more dairy farms. How ever you count them we have a lot of milk being produced around here, which is a real good thing if you want to make milk chocolate.

Of course, if you are familiar with cows at all, you know that when there is a lot of milk being produced, there is bound to be a lot of something else produced. That is why Baraboo Candy Co. has had such a success with their "Cow Pies"*. This truly Wisconsin candy is one of their best sellers. If you ever get a chance to try one, you too, will discover how totally yummy a Cow Pie can be.

Three full ounces of rich chocolate mixed with crunchy pecans and gooey caramel, the Cow Pie is something like "turtle" candies, but oh so much bigger and better. You can get Cow Pies all year, but this time of year Baraboo Candy Co. makes special Valentine Cow Pies. Now wouldn't your sweetie really appreciate getting a Cow Pie for Valentines Day?

Baraboo Candy Co. does a great business in retail candy sales, especially during the tourist season. They are also a wholesale candy supplier. Cow Pies are not the only thing they make, there is plenty of yummy regular candy, but they have become best known for their Cow Candy In the Cow Candy series, in addition to the famous Cow Pies, there are Udderfingers toffee candies, Moo Chews chocolate covered caramels, and Cow Lick suckers. As their ad says, "Cow Candy is, of course, "Udderly Delicious"!" They even have a "mascot" Homer Holstein, and he would be the first to agree.

A family owned business, Baraboo Candy Co. uses only the finest ingredients and hand makes their candies, one of the reasons they have earned the Wisconsin State Fair Seal of Excellence for the past eleven years. Located in the rolling hills of Baraboo, right across Highway 12 from the Ho-Chunk Casino, Baraboo Candy is in an excellent location for marketing to the tourists. Baraboo is also home to the Circus World Museum and only minutes from all of the attractions in the Wisconsin Dells area.
