Celebrate the New Year in Wisconsin

New Years Eve is a time to get dressed up, drink champagne, and party, or maybe you prefer watching the ball drop in Times Square. If you would like to do something different this year, Wisconsin has some different things to offer.

What else can you do besides the usual gala party? You might spend the evening enjoying some of the fabulous light displays put on by a number of communities. True, most of these are Christmas displays, but if your life is half as busy as mine, you didn't have time before Christmas to go enjoy the spectacular displays.

Milwaukee Area
December 31 is the last day to partake in a Kwanzaa celebration for children, included are hands-on activities and storytelling. Catch it from noon to 3 PM at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Or maybe you would like to take in a basketball game. The Marquette Golden Eagles Women play the Notre Dame women Tuesday afternoon, at 2:00 PM, at the US Cellular Arena, in Milwaukee.

If you are in the Milwaukee area, and would like to share a New Year celebration with your children, head for the Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Kids make a noisemaker from 10 to noon, participate in a Winter Fun Workshop at 1:00 pm, and can take part in a pretend New Year's countdown in the Museum's atrium.

Milwaukee provides Day Camps on New Years Eve Day. Space Explorers, for ages 6 to 10, happens at the Discovery World Museum. Learn about space travel, rocketry, and flight. Spy Gadgets is for kids 11 and over. They will investigate basic electronics and mechanics through espionage. Explore some of the gadgets and gizmos used by Secret Agents, learn the basics of electronics and espionage, and create devices needed by every Spy. Call 414-765-9966 to pre-register for either camp.

Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties, as well as a number of locations in Great Milwaukee offer Firstar Eve Celebrations. These parties are alcohol free and fun for the whole family. Another smoke-free, alcohol-free place to spend the evening is the Coffee House, 631 N 19th St, Milwaukee. Participate in a New Years Acoustic/Spoken Word Open Stage. No admission charged.

If you prefer the symphony try New Years Eve at the Pops. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Music will be playing, with Director Andreas Delfs on the podium at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Order your tickets early, as they sold out last year.
