Finding Culture in the Northwoods

He wants to vacation in the Northwoods fishing. She wants a vacation with theater, fine dining, and art museums. Relax; you can both have what you want in Wisconsin.

A vacation in the Northwoods does not have to be one of rustic cabins, mosquitoes and fish. It can include live theater, art museums and fine dining anywhere in the state.

Fine Dining

The Guide's Inn at Boulder Junction is recognized as THE BEST in fine dining in the Northwoods. They feature more than 35 entrees, all prepared to order. People visit just for the experience.

The Silent Woman Restaurant in Fennimore was once a theatre. It now features an enchanting garden courtyard surrounded by intimate dining spaces.

Ethnic Dining
Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant at Sister Bay is open year round. It features Swedish atmosphere and food specialties.

Mama's Supper Club at Minocqua features Mama's own Sicilian recipes, overlooking beautiful Curtis Lake.

Draganettis Ristorante in Altoona continues the family tradition of serving homemade Italian dishes.

(Pronounced braut, we do not eat our misbehaving children). Miesfeld's Sheboygan brats is just one of many locations to find great Wisconsin brats.

Many restaurants are unique due to either their scenic views or the historic buildings they occupy.

The Theater

The theater season has always been during the winter, but some types of theater only work during the summer. There are several outdoor theaters in Wisconsin, doing everything from Shakespeare to Chautauqua. In case of inclement weather, there are plenty of indoor theaters around too.

If you *ever* get the chance, *don't* pass up a chance to take in a show at the Big Top Chattauqua in Bayfield. I worked in Ashland one summer and saw several shows there. It is a treat I will always ...
