Wisconsin Dells – Tourist Mecca

© Peggy Hoehne

Those of us who live in Wisconsin are apt to take the tourist Mecca of Wisconsin Dells for granted. It has always been there within a few hours drive. The Kids Choir at church used to go there for a fun day. Groups of teenagers take off and spend the day. We forget that the rest of the world doesn't have anyplace like the Dells in their backyards.

The Dalles of the Wisconsin River are one of the most scenic areas in a state full of scenic areas. The great outcroppings of rock carved by wind, water, and time stand in the water and along the shores like some ancient Stonehenge built in the waters of the beautiful Wisconsin River.

There are boat rides to the Upper Dells (above the dam). You can ride inside or on top and enjoy the serene, quiet beauty of nature in all her uniqueness. There are boat rides or Duck rides on the Lower Dells (below the dam). A Duck Ride is a renovated World War II amphibious vehicle; it goes on both land and water. The kids especially love them as they roar down the hill and splash into the water. With either of the rides on the Dells you get a tourist guide who gives you a memorized history of the area and points out highlights along the way.

The Dells are beautiful, but many people have forgotten they exist. The Wisconsin Dells experience these days may not come near any boats or the river. Wisconsin Dells is the Waterpark Capitol of the World. It is the home of Noah's Ark, the largest Waterpark in America, Family Land at Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park, Adventure Lagoon Waterpark, Chula Vista Waterpark & Mini-Golf, Riverview Park & Waterworld, as well as more Indoor Waterparks than anywhere else in America. In Wisconsin Dells you can play in the water whether it's sunny or rainy, hot or cold, summer or winter.

If waterparks and theme parks aren't what you are looking for, there are numerous golf courses, miniature golf courses, horseback riding, riding on a steam train, boating, swimming, and much, much more.

There is a wide variety of nightly entertainment. If you haven't been to a Drive-In theater for awhile (or never), you can go to the Big Sky Twin Drive-In Theatres. Catch the show at the Crystal Grand Music Theatre, visit nearby Ho-Chunk Casino & Bingo, enjoy Thunder Valley Inn's Farm Threshing Dinner Show, take in the Tommy Bartlett Show or unwind at the Wisconsin Opry Dinner and Show.
