Vacation with Capone, Dillinger, and ‘Baby Face’ Nelson

Northern Wisconsin has beautiful scenery, great fishing, and cool summer air. People come from all over to vacation in this beautiful area. Some of the people who have enjoyed Northern Wisconsin have been rather infamous.

Al and Ralph Capone

Al Capone and his brother Ralph had summer homes near Couderay, Wisconsin. In the 1920s Al Capone built a beautiful 45 acre estate called The Hideout. The main lodge is stone and features 18-inch thick walls, a gun tower, machine gun emplacements, and a jail cell. There are also more common features, such as a massive fireplace, custom-carved spiral staircases, and deer-antler light fixtures.

Take a tour through Capone's living quarters and around the ground's nine additional buildings. The garage built to house Capone's eight black limousines is now a restaurant where you can enjoy lunch while contemplating how Capone could have stood off an attack by a rival gang or the FBI from within his private fortress.

Ralph Capone returned to the Northwoods in the 1930s and built a home near Mercer. He was respected and well-liked by the townspeople. He lived there quietly and died in a nursing home at Hurley, Wisconsin, in Nov. 1974. Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, in Door County has its own Al Capone attraction. Visit Shipwrecked, which is said to have been a favorite hang-out of Al Capone. Supposedly, Capone used the tunnels under Shipwrecked and Egg Harbor to make quick getaways.

There is an interesting, if unverified, mention of secret underground tunnels beneath Burlington, Wisconsin, used by Al Capone during prohibition. Perhaps there is a hidden treasure vault. Maybe someone should explore them, live on television. Oh wait, Geraldo Rivera already did that back in 1986. I guess we'll let these tunnels stay secret and hidden.

Dillinger and his Gang, including Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis

During 1933 and early 1934, John Dillinger and his confederates were robbing banks, staging jailbreaks, and knocking over police arsenals throughout the Midwest. Shortly after breaking out of an "escape proof" jail in Indiana, Dillinger and his gang were looking for a safe place to hole up and relax.
