In nearly every area the Amish live, they encounter some level of hate crimes. As pacifists, they don’t fight back, and seldom report anyone who assaults them. Often authorities are unaware of the problems until someone ends up in the hospital or dead.

Over the years there have been other disagreements between the Amish and their “English” (as they call us) neighbors. In 1972, the Wisconsin vs Yoder case went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the Amish gained the right to keep their children home after the eighth grade.
