  • America's Dairyland: A phrase that appears on Wisconsin state license plates is another reference to the states dairy production.
  • The Cheese State: Wisconsin has also been referred to as "The Cheese State" because of its large cheese production.
  • Cheeseheads : A name for Wisconsonites, originally due to the cheese production. There is now an entire industry of Cheesehead products.

    The Geography


    Wisconsin is 310 miles up and down and 260 miles across.

    The geographic center of Wisconsin is located in Wood County, 9 miles SE of Marshfield at:
    • Longitude: 89° 45.8'W
    • Latitude: 44° 26.0'N
    Wisconsin is bordered by Minnesota and Michigan on the north and by Illinois on the south. On the east, Wisconsin is bordered by Lake Michigan. On the west, Wisconsin is bordered by Minnesota and Iowa.

    The Mississippi River makes up much of Wisconsin's Western border. Lake Superior covers much of the Northern border and Lake Michigan makes up a good part of the Eastern border.

    Wisconsin covers 65,503 square miles. It ranks 23rd in size out of the 50 states.
    Highest Point 1,951 feet above sea level - Timms Hill in Price County
    Lowest Point 581 feet above sea level - Lake Michigan
    Land Area 54,314 square miles of Wisconsin are land areas.
    Water Area 11,190 square miles of Wisconsin are covered by water.
    Total number of lakes: 14,927
    Forest area: 14,478,00 acres
    Practically all the natural lakes in Wisconsin are the result of glaciers.
    There are 108,000 miles of roads in Wisconsin.
    Wisconsin has 500 different types of soils.
    Horicon Marsh-in 1991 dedicated as a wetland of international importance (number 9 of only 15 in the U.S.).
    There are 1,050 miles of Great Lakes and Mississippi shoreline.
    The largest lake is Lake Winnebago with137,708 acres.
    Wisconsin's deepest lake is Green Lake with a depth of 229 feet.
    22 Apostle Islands comprise the National Lakeshore in Lake Superior. The smallest is 3 acres. The largest is 14,000 acres.
