The Great Divide Highway is one great way to see this scenic part of the state. It runs primarily through the Chequamegon National Forest and follows 29 miles of State Highway 77 through forest, lakes, marshes, and streams. Part of the National Scenic Byway this route offers a unique look at the Northwoods between Glidden and Hayward. You might see black bear, timber wolves, or white-tailed deer. Eagles glide overhead, beaver and loons frequent the lakes and bogs.
From Clam Lake in Ashland County, travel 17 miles north on County GG to the Penokee Overlook. Walk up the staircase to the viewing platform for a fantastic view of the Great Divide area. Autumn is a particularly scenic time to visit the Northwoods and drive the Great Divide Highway, but any time of year offers unique displays of beauty. Even winter offers many activities and things to do in the Northwoods. (*plate - pertaining to the structure or movement of the earth's crust; "tectonic plates". Fault lines are where two plates meet. The plates continually move at a rate of a few inches a year, producing continental drift.) Go To Page: 1 2
