At a dinner last night my friends and I were enjoying a bottle of Portal Del Alto, a Chilean Cabernet. A friend made the comment, "I can't tell one wine from the other." I asked if she had a favourite coffee or could tell the different types of coffee blends. She continued to tell me her favourite coffee company was Torrefazione and the blend. I responded if you want to learn about wine you should have the same passion and try to pay more attention to what you are being served. I know it is hard to be interested if you never pick the wine from a menu or try new things from the liquor store. I also realize that wine is a social thing and most of the time you are more interested in the conversation than analyzing the wine. So here is a little tip to get you started. The next time you are having company over and you know your going to be serving more than one bottle of wine buy two different wines but make sure they are the same grape varietal, (like a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, etc.) Open both bottles before your company arrives. This will let the wine breath and give you a chance to do a small tasting. Try a small taste of each wine analyzing the flavours. This will give you a chance to pinpoint what you like or dislike about each of the wines. I have written a article called, "How To Properly Taste Wine." You can find it at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wine... If you are really interested in wine tasting you can start a journal and write down your preferences. Eventually you will have enough information so that you can go to you local liquor store describe what you like in a wine and have the salespeople recommend wines you might enjoy. You will be surprised how fast your wine knowledge will grow. You might even get so hooked you will want to start collecting wine. I also have a good article called, "Starting A Wine Collection" at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/wine... If you would like a starting point here is a recommendation. I usually don’t give specific recommendations but I tried a nice Italian wine that was balanced with pronounced jammy fruit, spicy, and floral. The alcohol level is high at 16% so you have to be careful of your consumption. The wine is called Tradizione del Nonno, Pichierri.
