Champagne & New Years

There cannot be a better time to concentrate on the subject than just before the big New Year toast. If you have a large pocket book you might want to go with the always-popular Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon at $151.oo, or Louis Roederer Cristal for $145.95. They are both stunning and ready to impress at any occasion. Both are the high-price choice of the masses but not always the best choice. I personally prefer the champagne from Perrier-Jouet, Belle Epoque for $86.95. It is dry and well-balanced with a wonderful finish. Not only is the taste a treat, every bottle is hand painted. The whole package is quite something. Now if you've come to this point and you're thinking, "what about a good Champagne or sparkling wine that is more affordable and will not taste like carbonated soda pop," — don't worry. I have some excellent suggestions.

Bollinger — Grand Annee, $74.50.
Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin — Brut $45.95.
Charles Heidsieck — Millesime Brut $44.95.
Pol Roger — Cuvee De Reserve Brut $40.95.
Piper Heidsieck — Brut $34.95.

Champagne is suppose to be a perk so don't spend more than you can afford. The trick is to find a good product in your price range. You will see in your local liquor store that there are Champagnes made by these suggested producers that are less expensive. If this is more your price point, go for it. These products get all the expertise and quality the vineyard has to offer and are a great alternative.
