Why B.C. Wines

© Audra Ligumsky

There is a reason people are investing millions of dollars in B.C. wineries; the wine being produced is world class. Proven to the world at the International Wine & Spirits competition in London. Mission Hill winery won the Avery Trophy for their 1992 Grand Reserve Chardonnay. The investment has made it possible for the wineries to obtain state of the art equipment, education, and talent.

Last May I was able to get away to a Okanagan Vineyard tour with The Wine & Spirits Class at Vancouver College. We were able to visit a number of wineries. Not only was I impressed with the quality of products I was able to taste but also the facilities. LeComte, Gray Monk, Tin Horn, to name a few, have created beautiful tasting rooms, and viewing decks to witness the production, fermentation, and the wine makers.

The trend for the vineyards has been to apply for a J license to operate 'A Wine Lounge'. They are not allowed to be advertised as a 'Wine Bar', 'Winery Bar', or 'Bistro', all of which describe the operation and services provided.

Which brings us to wine and dining. The rules of matching wine to food are becoming more relaxed, as they should be. In keeping with tradition I will be giving you some wine and food combinations to complement the Weekly Wine Tastings. You can take these suggestions to the restaurants or enjoy them in the privacy of your own home.

I will be showing you how to set up a functional cellar. Functional meaning you will learn how to collect wine for every occasion, label the wine, and knowing when the wine has matured.

Next we will be learning tasting edict and how to set up a wine diary using the right terminology to describe the wine.

Did You Know:

The Copenhagen City Heart Study (Copenhagen Denmark 1995) Dr. Martin Grembeck did a 10 year study on 13,000 people between the ages of 30 - 79. "What surprised us the most was the finding that wine intake up to 3-5 glasses daily implied significantly a lower mortality rate".
