Chardonnay is on the rise and I can't see it slowing down. Planting of the Chardonnay vines are steadily increasing. Viticulturist like vines because they are resilient vines that are easy to cultivate and produce a generous crop. The grape is very malleable creating quite a range of styles. The flavors can have apple, pear, citrus fruits, melon, pineapple, peach, butter, wax, toffee, butterscotch, vanilla, mixed spice, wet wool (burgundy), minerals, and flint (Chablis). The Chardonnay gets its vanilla oak flavors from the oak barrels used in the fermentation process. A full bodied buttery flavor is very common in a Napa Valley Chardonnay and is increasing in Australian and New Zealand. The French still prefer the a lighter, crisp flavor that is their traditional style. Either way the Chardonnay grape can create different characteristics for everyone to enjoy.
