Changing Startup/Shutdown Screens!!!

© Ankan Brahmachari

Getting bored of the clouds greeting you every time you start Windows? You can change the startup and shutdown screens to the ones of your choice. Changing your Startup and Shutdown screens is easy.

How to Proceed?
Both the opening and closing screens are of the resolution of 640x480, however, they are stored in the size of 320x400 in the form of a bit map (BMP). You will need a Graphic Editor, which can convert your images to a 320x400 format with 256 colors.

If the logos of your choice are in a BMP format then you can open it in MS Paint (  --> Program Files --> Accessories --> Paint) and type Control + E.

If the logos are in a different format, you will need to get an editor like PaintShop Pro or PhotoShop, that can open and covert files of different formats. You can download a trial version of Paint Shop Pro here.

Changing Logos
The logos are located as follows:

Logo
Location
Startup (during boot)C:\Windows\Logo.sys
Wait (during Shutdown)C:\Windows\Logow.sys
Shutdown (after Shutdown)C:\Windows\Logos.sys

Please remember to backup those to files to a different location first. Copy the logo files you made as Logo.sys, Logow.sys and Logos.sys.

More Options
There are many utilities for Startup/Shutdown screens that you will find useful to use. Some of the ones that I found useful are:
