Registry Magic For Windows - Part 2- Focus on Windows - 24/01/00 continued.......

NOTE: The tips mentioned here have been tried on Windows 95. They might not work on your system (even on Windows 98 which has the same registry structure) because each system works differently during installation and configuration of programs.

Restore your Registry!
Restoring the registry in Microsoft Windows 98 is pretty simple. All you have to do is restart the computer to MS-DOS mode and type scanreg /restore at the DOS prompt.

Bypass the (upgrade) check-post
When you want a clean installation of Windows 98 and also wish to bypass the check for the older version of Windows, just boot your system from a boot diskette (Windows 95/98-startup disk, or DOS bootable diskette).

Create a file in the root directory of your boot partition named "ntldr". The file can't be a zero-byte file, so edit it and put "REM" on a single line with no spaces in front of it. This should bypass the check for previous version of Windows by fooling the system into thinking that NT has been installed. Nice, huh!

Sleeker shortcuts
If you don't like the arrows indicated in the shortcut icons, use TweakUI to alter their look. If you also do not want 'Shortcut To' to appear when a new shortcut is being created, simply uncheck the prefix 'Shortcut To' to lose the extra text.

Lost your DLLs (Dynamic link library)?
Those upgrading their system to Windows 98 might have noticed that the new OS does not support the functionality of certain programs or peripherals (such as scanners). This is because Windows 98 overwrites newer dlls (dynamic link library) on older ones, and these may be incompatible with your existing programs. But there is a way to retrieve these dlls.

From the Start menu, select Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Next, from the Microsoft System Information windows, select Tools from the menu bar and choose Version Conflict Manager. This will open a list of overwritten files listing names and version numbers. Select the ones you need to restore.
