Windows 98 Bugs II
You can avoid this by updating from the Start menu. To restore the icon to it's original location or use the current browser, log on to http://www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
BUG 7
Do not receive free downloads and patches
Cure: The problem lies with the Internet Explorer security. In case you have set the Internet Explorer security option to HIGH you will not receive any of the free 'upgrades' catalogs from Microsoft. In order to get these, change your settings to Medium or Low before you get your Windows updated.
BUG 8
Windows does not start
Cure: There could be a number of reasons as to why Windows 98 fails to start. To avoid this start you PC in the Safe mode.
Hold the [Ctrl] key before Windows begins to load, and keep it pressed until the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, resolve the conflict and restart the machine.
BUG 9
Setup hangs during hardware detection
Cure:
If this happens, power down the
system completely. Do not use [ctrl] + [alt] + [del] to End Task or the reset switch. You may probably need to do this a couple of times. [Believe me it works :o)]. Start your computer in safe mode and re-install Windows
98.
BUG 10
Compressed drives are not recognized
Cure:
Why Windows 98 sometimes refuses to recognize compressed drives is still a mystery. But if you have the Windows directory on a compressed drive that is not mounted, you will not be able to start Windows. If you suspect the compressed drive, use scandisk to check for errors (Scandisk/Mount X:) where X is the drive letter of the compressed drive.
These solutions are valid only if the problems have been caused while installing/using Windows 98. Watch out for malfunctioning hardware or improperly installed software already existing in your system.
