BUG 2 Applications
refuse to work
Cure:
Though most softwares that work on Windows 95 will continue to do so under Windows 98, but there are many exceptions. Low-level system utilities such as diagnostic programs, disk optimizing tools and anti virus software will cause concern. This problem arises due to software incompatibility. To resolve this, go in for 98 upgrades of those applications.
BUG 3 ACPI
Devices go to sleep mode and stay there
Cure:
Formed jointly by Microsoft, Intel
and Toshiba, the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface feature enables system hardware to give the operating system control over power management. Improvement can now be programmed-and not just wired-into the hardware. The result: improved power management across a wide variety of hardware platforms. Under Windows 98 some system fails to enter Suspend or Standby modes and even if they do, they fail to resume the normal mode. Windows 98 demands that each system must necessarily be ACPI-
(Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) compliant.
You can work around the problem by turning 'off' all the BIOS level power management functions, and let Windows 98 manage all this on it's own. If these don't work, then wait till Microsoft or the other hardware manufacturers develop patches.
BUG 4 Can't
set up network
Cure:
Causes could range from an improper
network application, to a complete inability to establish a logical network contact. This can also give rise to a number of Dial-Up-Networking problems, more so in case of non-Microsoft upgrades.
Use the network icon found under the Control Panel to remove all clients, but note all the settings and the parameters, protocols and then re-boot the system. You can safely delete the Dial-Up-Networking option. Re-boot the system and again re-install all the necessary clients,
protocols
and Dial-Up-Networking connections. It works even though it is time consuming and tedious.
BUG 5 Cannot
locate installation files
Cure:
When you update your system to Windows
98 it does not let you specify the exact location for the destination files.
To stay informed regarding the changes made to the system, run the System file Checker. (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Tools
Information).
BUG 6
IE 4 Fails to part with Windows 98
Cure:
If you happen to be one of those
few who dislike using Internet Explorer and have deleted the icon from your desktop, you will get an error message the next time you access Windows.
