The year  that went by was the year of the alternative OS. Microsoft, besieged from all sides, saw its flagship operating system falter as  open source came into its own. Windows bashing became a pastime for many. However, Microsoft has not been taking any of this lying down. Their new OS will hit the shelves on February 17, 2000.

It's that time again when we can change our operating system to keep up with the latest. But is the switch to Windows 2000 worth it?

REASONS

1. File System
Finally, a Windows NT version that recognizes NTFS. What's more it can operate on  FAT16 and FAT32 too!

2. Open With
To open a file with a particular application in Windows 98 a  user has to hold the shift keys down while right clicking the file and then select "Open With" from context menu. This 'hold' process can be a pain if you have to do the same thing 500 times a day.
Windows 2000 simplifies things, First of all, the 'Open With' option is a standard choice on the right-click menu, so you don't have to go through the convoluted 'hold-down-the-SHIFT-key' scenario. You simply right-click the image file, choose 'Open With' and select application from the dialog box, as before. But this is where Windows 2000 really shines. Once we have done this, and Open With <Application> the process becomes easier the next time since the option is added to the right click menu for that file type.

3. Find File is Integrated
When a user wants to locate a file, he also wants the file management capabilities of explorer. The new find file is intregated with Windows explorer, unlike it's predecessor of Windows 9x.

4. Uncluttered System Views
Windows 98 Explorer has several icons that are rarely used. In contrast, Windows 2000 has a clean desktop and a even cleaner Explorer.

5. Personalized Start Menu
The difficulty in finding the most used programs in the start menu reduces the effectivity of the shareware and freeware concepts. Also the Start Menu can become very confusing. This is where Personalized Start Menu comes in. In Windows 2000 the Personalized Start Menu categorizes programs making life a little bit easier.
