Are Yo W2k-jan2000-page 101 Are you W2K Compliant?

The first question user are likely to ask is: " Will the new operating system support my hardware?" In this respect, Microsoft has done a excellent job over the years. Microsoft's operating systems have the best hardware support in the industry. Of course, hardware recognition working with minimum hardware are completely different things.

As with all new operating system, the hardware requirements go up. For Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft recommends a 300 MHz Pentium II desktop PC or 233 MHz notebook - with 64 MB RAM. Microsoft lists a 166 MHz Pentium with 32 MB RAM as a minimum requirement, but that's a joke. If you try installing W2K on Pentium 166, you are either very brave or very foolish. :o)

During a test of RC2, we found that application work fine enough on a 333 MHz Celeron with 64 MB RAM. Many Windows 98 features show up in W2K Plug-and-Play (PnP), and Advanced Configuration and power interface (ACPI) power management, USB, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), DVD, IrDA, 32-bit Cardbus PC Card Slot, smart cards, multiple monitors and DirectX 7.0.

Unlike Windows NT 4, W2K can access updated service packs, patches and drivers via the Windows Update Web Site.
