NTFS!!! Is It Better!!!

What Makes NTFS Better!!

Windows 2000 supports FAT 16, FAT 32 and NTFS, unlike its predecessors NT 4 and Windows 98 that could see only two out of the three. If you were using NT 4 you couldn't see FAT 32 partition, with 98 you couldn't see NTFS. The fact the new OS recognizes all the three files systems means that you can do away with FAT 16, and stick to NTFS, which is the best file system anyway. Some of the features that make NTFS better are:

Drive Compression:
Compressing the data on the drive gives low capacity hard disks more space. This feature was available in Windows 9x but now you can individually compress certain folder and files without needing separate drive volume.

Security:
NTFS is built for security from the ground up, unlike the FAT file system. Users can provide not only the share permissions of Read, Change, and Full Control, but add a whole slew of additional rights and restrictions to the local partition, and files and folders contained within.

Data Encryption:
This feature is for the paranoid. It allows you to encrypt data on either the volume level or file level. The data, while encrypted, can be viewed only by the owner of the data! And only the administrator can change the encryption key.

Indexing Service:
Allows information contained on the drive to be indexed, enabling faster search - also a benefit when you add IIS on top for Web Site searching. Database developers knew this years ago; now it's implemented at OS level.
