Want to share your Internet connection with multiple user??? If you have a network then the simplest way will be to install a proxy server.
Proxy Server?
A proxy server is specialized software that works as a link between your local network and the Internet. It accepts all requests of data transfer and it fulfils after checking up the installed site filters and local cache.
To understand what a Proxy Server does, let me make an analogy. Let's say Rahul wanted to call someone on the telephone. He has a condition that makes it so he can't hear or talk to people on the telephone. Anytime he needs to talk to someone on the telephone, he has his wife Neha do it for him. Rahul tells Neha what he wants to say and Neha says it for him. Neha relays the information back to Rahul. This is basically what a Proxy Server does -- it takes requests from one place and makes them on their behalf. It also relays back the responses. A proxy server can also cache certain types of requests so that if it is made again, it can be served locally without having to go fetch it from the network. It can also restrict who can access what, which is a feature that many corporations use.
In a nutshell, a proxy server performs
following tasks:
-
Filter data transmissions to/from the Internet and your network.
-
Share a single Internet connection.
-
Provide strong web-caching facilities.
Hence
implementing a proxy server helps in using the Internet in a faster, safer and in a more efficient manner. Since all machines use the same Internet connection, the data transfer rate does tend to go down but its effect is not visible for a small network. In general, much more time in spent in viewing and processing information from the Internet, rather than downloading it. Performance can be deteriorated in case of multiple file downloads.
Windows Requirements
A
Windows 95 machine can be used for running a proxy server. It is highly recommended to install Windows 95 Service Pack 1 (for Windows 95). It is done to prevent a potential security hazard.
The machine that runs your proxy server will need to be running the proxy server any time you want other computers on your LAN to be able to access the Internet, though the machine running the proxy server can also be used for other tasks. It should have additional memory to run the Proxy Server software
