"A Field Guide to the Birds", East of the Rockies by Roger Tory Peterson
For people who are interested in the birds native to their area, this is an excellent resource book. Detailed descriptions of each species, their natural habitat and diet are presented in an easy to use format. Hundreds of full color pictures accompany the written information. How each species vocalizes and the range it inhabits is included as well. This is THE book to have to aid in recognizing birds you see in your area. A wonderful family project is to put together a "bird watch" chart. Put up a chart to mark off the various species of birds each family observes outside. You can keep it that simple or make a more advanced game by seeing which family member sees the most of one type of bird or the most variety of species. Mark down the date, type of species, whether it was male or female (when able to distinguish between them be color markings), and any other pertinent information you think of. Discussions about birds that migrate, when and to where, are great topics for the family to learn more about. Birding is a wonderful activity, whether it is done alone or in a group. It gives you a chance to experience nature at its best. Go To Page: 1
