Visiting Maine's "Wildlife Park"Thinking about a trip to Maine? You might consider a trip to Maine's Wildlife Park, if you would like to see some of Maine's native wildlife up close and personal, without risk of coming into harm's way. The Maine Wildlife Center is open from mid-April until Veteran's Day (November 11) from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (gates close at 4:00 p.m. and visitors must leave the park by 5:30 p.m.) It is located in Gray, Maine on Route 26. History: Originally, starting in 1931, the park contained only pheasants, living on the land in natural groups numbering in the thousands. These birds were being raised for release during bird hunting season. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife agents decided to utilize this area as a safe place to care for injured and orphaned wildlife as well in 1982. Wildlife not able to return to the wild for various reasons would be housed here permanently. You are able to see many of Maine's native wildlife here at the Park, some you might never see out in the wild. The Animals: Some of the animals you might see during your visit include, moose, lynx, white-tailed deer, opossum, black bear, bobcat, porcupine, raccoon, hawks, owls and many more species. You never know what to expect as some of the animals can finally be released to the wild as others take their place. The Programs: There are nature trails to follow, picnic facilities and exhibits to view. You will find a nature bookstore and gift shop run by the Maine Audubon Society. Shelters are available to rent for special occasions. Outdoor classrooms are held on Sundays (mid-May to mid-September) for visitors of all ages. Wildlife and Conservation programs are offered to school groups (midweek in May, June, September and October). Guided tours are also available with reservations.
