Bambi - The Three-Legged Fawn (Part 2)Well, the idea worked. Food in the box didn't seem like such a bad idea after all, when you got hungry enough. Special food treats helped too. I got a call just a few days later that Bambi was getting comfortable with going in and out of the crate. I made arrangements to pick her up the following day. The sun shone brightly and the trip to Bambi's present home was uneventful. I arrived just before feeding time and was amazed at the nonchalant way she entered the crate. Rather than taking a chance on her exiting it before finishing her meal, the sliding door was closed quickly behind her once she was all the way in. She has not been closed in before this day and was acting a bit unsettled. The decision to get her relocated as soon as possible was unanimous. We each picked grabbed one of the four protruding handles secured to the sides of the crate and quickly proceeded to carry our captive to the waiting van. Bambi blatted a few times and we spoke to her in reassuring tones, telling her she would be out again soon. Thankfully, the trip home was as uneventful as the ride there and soon we were carrying the crate into her new home. A large stall had been prepared for her arrival. Pine boughs were scattered on the floor and piled up to create a blind (a hiding place for her). A bucket with fresh water awaited her, as did a small second helping of grain in a small feed bucket. The stall door was secured and the crate door was opened. Bambi backed out a whole lot faster than she had gone in. She looked none the worse for wear and was soon munching contentedly on pine needles off one of the boughs. We slowly and carefully carried the crate out of the stall, hoping to not disturb her any more than she already had been. It was time to leave her alone and let her settle in to her new surroundings and settle in, she did. (Next - What do you do with a three-legged deer?)
