Bottle Feeding Baby AnimalsHere are words of wisdom from a good friend and experienced wildlife and exotic animal handler: Tim Wise. I want to touch on a very important issue that has come up that is effectively causing deaths in babies. The problem is that some are aspirating their babies during feeding times. By that I mean we are feeding the babies too fast and the formula can be seen coming from the nose or the baby begins to choke due to excess fluids being introduced too fast for the baby to eat. The most typical problem is found in those who use nipples that have been cut rather than puncturing the nipples with a heated needle or some device that creates a small enough hole that will require the baby to suck. With cut nipples, it is very very easy to over feed the baby and cause the introduction of the formula into the lungs of the baby, thus causing Bacterial Phenomena. And of course, Bacterial Phenomena in a baby just a few days, weeks or even months old is almost 100% fatal! Typically the baby becomes lethargic, stools become loose and the baby begins to loose its desire to eat. Thereby becoming dehydrated. The immediate introduction of sub-cue fluids and antibiotics is required and then all we can do is hope for the best and pray the baby has enough strength to fight off the infection we have caused! The need to suckle is a biological one. First it stimulates the digestive system, the baby receives nourishment and the baby bonds with the feeding mother. But to "pour" the formula into an open mouth will only accomplish one thing - death! To puncture your nipples all you have to do is place a large sewing needle through the nipple more than ½ way. Heat the needle end until it starts to turn red and then pull the needle back out of the nipple. The faster you pull the nipple out the smaller the hole will be. If you are including some cereal in the formula all you have to do is reinsert the needle, reheat and pull back through again a little slower this time. Young babies, especially very young ones need to suck! Yes you may be cutting down on the time required to feed the little guys at 2AM, but what are you really accomplishing? Think about it. We have just recently seen this in action and I have to say at this point, at least one little life is hanging in the balance because of it. We pray there is not a second! So please - please heed this warning. The life you save may be one you love!!!!!!!! Take the extra 30 seconds to save a life time.
