Introduction to Wildlife Rehabilitation

Hi, my name is Clayton and I am my mom's assistant with her wildlife rehabilitation work. She has cared for birds and animals for over 25 years. She has an official permit from the State of Maine and she also has a federal permit required to care for migratory birds.

I love the animals and am glad I can help my mom with them. I will be telling you all about the different animals (and birds) we have cared for here. I will also be telling you (with my mom's advice) some important things people should know about when dealing with wildlife.

Wildlife rehabilitators care for injured and orphaned wildlife. We never know what will be brought to us for help. A couple of my favorite animals to care for are baby fawns and squirrels. I like raccoons too, but I am not allowed to handle them anymore because of rabies being in our state now. I will be writing an article about this terrible problem affecting our wildlife. Some of the baby birds we care for are very funny looking until they get their adult feathers, called plumage. These animals require a lot of care and not all of them survive. Even though some of them die or have to be euthanized, I feel good about trying my best to help them. Right now if the animal has bad injuries we have to take them to the local veterinary hospital for medical treatment. I plan to study veterinary medicine in college when I am older, then I can help my mom even more.

I will tell you about how my mom got started doing this, good books to read, other organizations that help wildlife and sites that offer information too. Maybe after reading my articles you will be encouraged to consider being a wildlife rehabilitator too
